What Should Be in Every Birth Plan

Let's be real yall! As beautiful as births are, they are unpredictable as well. This is why you have to "Stay Ready So You Don't Gotta Get Ready", not because we want to control it all, but because we DESERVE to be seen, heard, and prepared. Having on paper what you want allows you to confidently express to your doctor as well as nurses what you want on the day of Delivery.
As a Doula who’s supported births in hospitals and in a home, as well as a woman who has supported her own births I’ve seen firsthand how a thoughtful plan brings peace, clarity, and confidence.
What is a Birth Plan?
A birth plan is a written document that outlines your preferences for labor, delivery, and postpartum care. It helps you, your support team, and your providers all be on the same page. You want COLLABORATIVE care!
🖊️ What to Include in Your Birth Plan:
Here’s what I recommend every birthing person include:
1. Labor Preferences
Who YOU want present
Pain relief options (epidural, natural methods, etc.)
Movement and positioning
Environment (lighting, music, aromatherapy)
2. Medical Interventions
Thoughts on Pitocin, membrane stripping, or C-sections
Preferences on cervical checks
Informed consent for any interventions
3. Delivery Preferences
Position for pushing
Delayed cord clamping
Skin-to-skin contact immediately after birth
4. Postpartum Wishes
Newborn procedures (eye ointment, Hep B, etc.)
Breastfeeding support
Visitors
5. Your Values + Voice Include affirmations, prayers, your favorite scriptures to help ground you.

💬 Final Thoughts
Every birth is unique and YOURS. Your birth plan isn’t about perfection — it’s about preparation. Speak your needs. Hold space for your power. And remember, you were made for this.
“And the LORD answered me, and said, Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it." Habakkuk 2:2
